What is the composition of billiard balls?

snooker vs pool balls

There are many materials that can be used to make pool balls. These include wood, plastic and phenolic resins. Each material has its strengths and weaknesses. Despite the many choices, phenolic pool balls are typically the most durable.

The phenolic resin balls are durable and strong, but they are also scratch-resistant. They are usually more expensive, but the increase in price is worth it. These pool balls are also known for their unique feature of high density.

Phenolic Resin has been used in many industries. It is made by mixing phenol with formaldehyde. To make the ball, the mixture is compressed under extreme pressure. The material can withstand extreme temperatures and has a high bonding power. Additionally, phenolic resin's molecular structure is more resistant to chipping. The phenolic resin pool ball can last five to six times as long as polyester balls.

Plastic compounds are also non-flammable and very durable. There are also some downsides to plastic compounds. They are less shiny than phenolic-resin balls and can also lose their shine quickly. They can also cause burn marks to the table if they are used.

Plastics were not yet developed in the 19thcentury. Leo Baekeland, an American Chemist, discovered a chemical that could be moulded to create plastic-like substances. The product was named Bakelite by him and was used in the manufacture of billiard balls. This new material was popularized as a standard for billiards.

During the early 20th century, the material became more popular in the United States, where wealthy people were able to buy them. It was still costly, but the material had more durability than wood. The material started replacing wood in production of billiard balls as early as the 1920s.

Nowadays, professional pool balls are made mostly from plastic and other phenolic resins. This material is more durable than ivory or wood. It is also a little bit more expensive, but it is a great investment for those who play often.

A set of professional pool ball sets is a great way to learn the game. You can even get a pool table accessory kit that includes extra pool balls and other equipment to ensure your game doesn't suffer from any damage.

An alternative is to buy synthetic materials such a polyurethane and acrylic. These materials are cheaper but have their downsides. These materials don't lose shine as quickly as phenolic rubber balls, but they aren't as durable and can be prone to deterioration as fast. They are not as scratch-resistant than phenolic resin.

You can also look into a set phenolic resin ball if you don’t have the funds to buy them. Polyester balls are cheap, but they aren't as durable. Some of them could even break. Make sure you only buy polyester balls from well-respected brands.
